Microneedling
What is Microneedling?
Microneedling is a dermatologic procedure in which tiny needles stimulate the top layers of your skin to encourage healing and increase collagen production. Microneedling is a minimally invasive anti-aging technique that can reduce the appearance of scars, wrinkles, and large pores.
How does it work?
At NOVA DERM INSTITUTE, we use the SkinPen®, a medical grade microneedling device to safely and effectively induce collagen production. The SkinPen® is the only FDA-approved microneedling device on the market. The goal of microneedling is to generate new collagen when the skin heals after being stimulated. This is called collagen induction therapy. Increasing collagen causes more blood flow to the skin and increases elasticity from new collagen. The result is that the skin becomes fuller, thicker and smoother.
What to expect during your treatment?
First a local anesthetic is applied at the start of the session to provide the most comfort during your treatment. Then the SkinPen® is used to stimulate new collagen growth. Your sessions are around an hour depending on the size of the treatment area.
What to expect after your treatment?
Once the numbing cream wears off you may feel some tenderness and tightness, which may last for a few days.
What are the benefits of this treatment?
Collagen induction therapy is used as an alternative to lasers and chemical peels. If you want a natural, noninvasive solution to wrinkles and scarring, microneedling can help. In addition to stimulating collagen production and blood flow, microneedling is also used for:
Improve skin texture.
Scars and stretch marks.
Uneven skin tone.
Skin laxity.
Improve skin color, and thickness for clients that are not candidates for laser or deep chemical peels.
FAQ’s
Does it hurt?
Microneedling treatment is painless because of the local anesthetic applied at the start of the session. You may feel some dull pressure on the area, but it will not hurt.
What are the side effects?
Microneedling can cause minor skin irritation, so you may notice your skin is slightly red for a few days after treatment. Overall, microneedling is safer and less invasive than alternative treatments with no recovery time or risk of bruising, so you can get back to your normal activities the same day.
How many treatments will you need?
Typically, we recommend three to six microneedling sessions spaced out over a month in order to get the best results.
How to prepare for the treatment?
Avoid topical retinoids, acids, exfoliants, and Accutane. Temporarily stop using anti-inflammatory and blood thinning medicines. If you have had a recent laser hair treatment or sunburn, you should wait two to three weeks before your microneedling session.
Is this treatment permanent?
With microneedling using the SkinPen®, you can see a noticeable improvement in the appearance of your skin for up to six months after treatment.
Who can get this treatment?
All skin types can get microneedling. Anyone who is wanting to improve their skin due to premature aging and sagging skin. For those looking to reduce fine lines and wrinkles as well as scarring from acne, chicken pox, injuries, and surgical scars.
